The Effect of Standard vs. Shorter Filter Lifespan During Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy
Germany100 participantsStarted 2026-06
Plain-language summary
This study aims to investigate shorter vs. standard filter lifespans in critically ill patients receiving continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) for acute kidney injury (AKI). The aim of this trial is to reliably implement, scheduled filter changes and to investigate whether shorter filter lifetime is associated with a lower incidence in rate of new infections.

Questions worth asking your doctor
Bring these to your next appointment. They're a starting point for a shared conversation — not a sign you qualify or a recommendation to enrol.
1This trial compares standard filter replacement schedules against shorter ones during continuous renal replacement therapy — can you explain how changing the filter more frequently might affect my kidney treatment, and what the potential risks or benefits of each approach are?
2Since this trial is listed as 'not yet recruiting,' does that mean it's not an option for me right now, and is there a standard filter replacement schedule already being used in my care that I should know about?
3The trial is measuring how well the medical team follows the filter change schedule — what does that tell us about how experimental or uncertain this protocol still is, and should that factor into my decision about participating?
4Because this is listed as Phase NA, meaning it's more of a procedural or protocol study rather than a traditional drug trial, how does that affect what's already known about safety, and what risks — if any — would I be taking on by being part of it?
5Are there standard continuous renal replacement therapy approaches already proven for my specific situation that I should consider before this trial becomes available, and how would you help me decide between waiting for this study or proceeding with current standard care?

Questions for the trial coordinator
The trial coordinator is the person who runs the study day to day. These cover the practical side — logistics, costs, and what taking part would actually mean for your life. The study team confirms whether you meet the criteria; these are questions to ask, not a sign you qualify.
1What does taking part actually involve week to week — how many visits, where, and how long does each one take?
2What costs are covered by the study, and what might I have to pay for myself, including travel, parking, or time off work?
3What happens during screening, and what happens if the study team confirms I don't meet the criteria after those tests?
4Who pays for the scans, blood work, and other tests the trial requires — the study, my insurance, or me?
5How will being in the trial affect my regular care, and will my own doctor stay informed and involved?
6Can I leave the trial at any point if I change my mind, and what would happen to my care if I do?
A starting point for the conversation — always confirm anything about your own eligibility, costs, and care with the study team and your doctor.
What they're measuring
1
Mean filter lifespan per patient
Timeframe: From start of CRRT to end of CRRT or at day 30 after randomization, whatever occurs first
2
Protocol adherence as documented filter change within the specified period
Timeframe: From start of CRRT to end of CRRT or at day 30 after randomization, whatever occurs first
