Inclusion Criteria: * patients undergoing undergoing open heart surgery with accepted indications under extracorporeal circulation Exclusion Criteria: * need for emergency surgery * surgery on the thoracic aorta * severe co-morbities causing anemia, immunosuppression etc. * immunocompromised patients * inability to give informed consent
