Inclusion Criteria: * adult patients with sepsis or septic shock within the first 24 hours after ICU admission Exclusion Criteria: * psychiatric disorders, brain diseases, chronic alcoholism, autoimmune rheumatic diseases * ophthalmological diseases, such as glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and cataract
